The Hirshhorn Museum brings together two revolutionary artists in one compelling, explosive conversation with Basquiat × Banksy. A show that places Basquiat’s Boy and Dog in a John Pump (1982) alongside Banksy’s “Banksquiat” Boy and Dog in Stop and Search (2018), marking the first time either work has been shown at the museum. The exhibit also includes rare collaborative pieces, multimedia presentations, and interactive elements that invite guests to engage with the artists' perspectives on race, politics, and the urban experience. These two colliding eras initiate a broader discourse on street art, cultural critique, and the evolution of graffiti from the street to the institution. Running from September 29, 2024, to January 19, 2026, this pop-up is just the beginning.
But the story doesn’t end there. Just steps away (literally), the Hirshhorn’s permanent collection holds space for contemporary heavyweights and rising visionaries. With over 12,000 works spanning sculpture, photography, digital art, and more, the Hirshhorn continues to be a sanctuary for expression that moves culture forward. The museum stands as a portal to creativity that refuses to sit still.
